CARVE OUT THE PERFECT MAN CAVE

Unique ideas to create a truly signature space

It is often said that a woman’s touch can turn a house into a home, and typically, that is true. Carefully selected color schemes, décor and curtains can make any room peaceful and homey, but let’s face it, not every man particularly enjoys pushing aside five throw pillows every time he sits down — no matter how cute they look when they are perfectly arranged on the sofa. Sometimes a man needs his own space to comfortably relax with friends during a football game or to simply unwind at the end of a busy day. If this is you, maybe it’s time for a dedicated man cave. Here are several ideas to consider!

Space
If it’s not in the budget to add a room onto your home for your man cave, that’s okay. There are other spaces you may already have that you can easily convert into your man cave, such as an extra bedroom, basement, den or even a large closet. “She-sheds” have received a lot of hype, but there’s no reason you can’t build a “he-shed” if your space and budget allow. Be creative with what space you can convert. Have you checked out your attic lately? It may just be the perfect space — if you rehome the Christmas tree, that is.

Themes
This is your space, so make it reflect your personality and interests.

  • Theater: Maybe you enjoy classic films and the feeling of an immersive theater session. Why not create a movie-themed space with a large TV or projector screen, a comfortable sofa or even better, luxury reclining massage chairs? Complete the look with framed movie posters on the walls, a mini fridge stocked with favorite beverages, a popcorn maker, strung lights and a plush rug.
  • Hunting: For the ultimate woodsman, go for a rustic, cabin-themed man cave. On the wall, hang a mountain-themed painting, a vintage map, deer antlers or other wildlife décor. Items made of natural elements — like wooden furniture positioned around a braided rug — will add to the woodsy charm. Top off the rustic feel with a fireplace (electric works, too!) and incorporate reclaimed wood paneling on the walls.
  • Sports: “Touchdown!” A sports-theme is an easy option for the die-hard fan. Let your team inform the color scheme, guiding your paint, rug and other décor choices. A large TV is a nonnegotiable, comfortable seating (but not too deep so jumping spectators can move as needed) and sports memorabilia like framed jerseys, a caught baseball or even ticket stubs from past games you have attended. Don’t forget the mini fridge and snack bar! If you are someone who likes collecting autographs from famous players, your man cave is the perfect place to showcase your collection.
  • Nostalgic music: “Everybody’s gone surfin’… Surfin’ U.S.A.” It’s hard to find something more retro than the Beach Boys! Start with a record player and gather all of your favorite oldies records together for easy access. Whether it’s a ’50s, ’60s or ’70s theme, here are a few other options. Find a vintage jukebox; working or not, it would be a perfect piece from the past. Bring in an old arcade game or two, select a bar-height table with red padded stools, and then hang some lights. If you really want to go all out, add checkerboard flooring or a shag rug. A nostalgic Coca-Cola sign, framed records or black and white photos will bring this theme full circle.

Small changes, big impact
If a full renovation isn’t feasible, remember that small adjustments can enhance and adjust the feel of your space. Here are a few ideas that are easy to implement and typically budget-friendly.

  • Shop at thrift stores, yard sales and online to find affordable furniture and décor for your space. DIY projects, such as repurposing a piece of furniture, keep costs low.
  • Lighting can change the entire mood and tone of your space. If you are going for a rustic or theater theme, you’ll want to choose dim and adjustable lighting. Avoid bright overhead light fixtures, and try unique lamps, custom light fixtures or string lights to create the right ambiance. For a sports theme, you may want to choose brighter lighting to create a more energetic atmosphere in the room. And for a nostalgic theme, add some ornate lamps or colored lights.
  • Is a large TV not in your budget or workable for your space? Pick up a projector. Rather than purchasing a large screen, paint the wall white with a black border to frame the “screen.” Mount a wireless soundbar, and you’re ready for game time. Now, your space can be multipurpose and quickly adjusted as needed.

The idea of a “getaway” for men is not new. Teddy Roosevelt had a man cave filled with hunting trophies according to Jamie Gold in Forbes magazine. Winston Churchill’s space displayed artwork while Mark Twain used his man cave for billiards. Gold explains that dedicated space away from the family can be beneficial for dads especially. Let your interests and hobbies guide the way!
