Festival of Trees Ushers in Holidays, Supports a Good Cause
Winter is almost here and the holiday spirit is alive across our region. Nowhere is the spirit more contagious than at the annual Festival of Trees event at Centra’s Alan B. Pearson Regional Cancer Center. Trees, wreaths and mantel displays have been decorated and donated by area businesses, decorators, garden clubs, non-profits and individuals, and will be showcased throughout the lobby. The event, which runs Friday, November 18 through Sunday, November 20, offers two open houses, a gala during which the donated displays will be auctioned, a luncheon and fashion show, and a “chance auction” where bidders can choose their prizes. This is a wonderful way to usher in the holiday season while giving back to your community. Come join us!

Listen to Stories with Santa
Get into the holiday spirit at the Historic Miller Claytor House at Riverside Park on Saturday, December 3 when Santa arrives to read a story to good little boys and girls. The house will be decorated for the holidays and filled with the aromas of evergreens and Christmas goodies. Santa will read at 1 p.m, 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. Limited seating is available; reservations are required by November 21. Cost is $5.00 per child. Refreshments will be served. For more information, call the Lynchburg Historical Foundation Office at (434) 528-5353.

Red Kettles Raise Funds, Hope
The Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign is a visible reminder during the holiday season that we have neighbors and friends who need our help. The iconic red kettles can be seen throughout the area as local citizens, church and civic groups, local government representatives, colleges, and businesses donate their time and resources to make an impact in our community. Proceeds collected in these red kettles help those in financial distress, often by meeting basic needs like food and shelter.

While the Red Kettle Campaign funds the needs of families at Christmas, this help continues after the holiday season. Money raised during this campaign also helps fund emergency shelter, transitional housing and warm meals for homeless and the working poor. The Salvation Army’s Center of Hope provides a transitional living facility and social services to facilitate independent living for the residents. That translates into a “home” for many who find themselves in crisis. With the community’s help, The Salvation Army can help provide not only physical necessities, but hope and transformation as well.
